WHY are you telling me this?

I was just telling Heather today how sick I am of men making weird and inappropriate comments to me.

Examples:

  • "I like your boobs.  They are really nice."  WHY are you telling me this?
  • (The man I used to date)  "I used to date 24-year old bartenders.  A lot of women hit on me at work. In fact, of the 5,000 women I have done business with over the years, I would say 4,900 of them have hit on me. Even women who report to me hit on me." Again, WHY are you telling me this?

Today, in fact, a man with whom I am friends:

  • "I get erect easily .... especially when any girl flirts with me." WHY are you telling me this?

As Heather rightly noted, it's like dealing with her children with these men. You have to say "Now ___, these are inappropriate comments, and you can't talk to people like this. If you say that again, you're going to have a time out.

Honestly, I thought the old school locker rooms were for this kind of talk. Go in your man cave or go talk to you guys friends about this crap. I don't want to hear it. It sets me into a middle RAGE.

Cure for the Rage?

Could this be a cure for the rage?  (the bad kind of rage only, of course!) If you're like me, you've noticed some changes in yourself that seemed to coincide with your crossing the precipice into the 40's.  Here are a few test questions:

Have you experienced in the last six months any of the following:

  • A feeling you're constantly racing from one task to the next?
  • Feeling wired yet tired?
  • A quickness to feel anger or rage?
  • Memory lapses or feeling distracted?
  • Loss of stamina, particularly in the afternoon from 2-5?
  • Insomnia or difficulty staying asleep?
  • Salt cravings?
  • Sugar cravings?
  • Brain fog?
  • Achy joints?
  • Thinning hair?
  • Additional few pounds that you just can't lose?
  • Heavy or irregular periods?
  • And yes, vaginal dryness and/or decreased libido?

Answer yes to a few (um, or most like I did)?  Read on..

The Hormone Cure: Reclaim Balance, Sleep, Sex Drive and Vitality Naturally with the Gottfried Protocol, by Dr. Sara Gottfried is an amazing resource to help find the possible reasons for these symptoms and potential solutions.  I mean, read the title -- who doesn't want all of those things?!?  Yes, please!

Here are a few things I love so far about this book.  First, this woman is legit.  Harvard/MIT/UCSF trained, board certified gynecologist.  She practiced traditional medicine for many years before realizing that, after seeing so many women with similar symptoms (as well as her own!), a more integrative approach was necessary.  Second, it's all about balance.  Balancing our lives helps us to be our best.  Third, for health/medical nerds like me (if I had the stomach for it, I'd go back to school to be a doctor!), it gives fantastic scientific background on every aspect of the uber-important endocrine system and the role each of the major hormones plays in our body, particularly as we age.  Fourth, Dr Gottfried is all about making lifestyle changes first and foremost, then supplementation, then, only if needed, bioidentical hormones.

Give this one a try - you will be sucked in like me.  I'll keep you posted on my own investigation.  Take charge of your health, ragers!   We need to be at our absolute best to rage on for the next 20, 30, 40 years or more!

Just say SOMETHING

Today's post will not be about cool products or the best of Facebook cocktail recipes.

Today I am in a middle RAGE about something --- people who never respond.

I'm sick of people not responding to my emails especially when I ask them a direct and targeted question like "Are we still on for dinner tomorrow night?" No response.

Stop fucking up my calendar. Answer me.

I'm so sick of the nonresponse.  It takes two seconds to hit the reply button. I know I send a lot of meaningless emails on a daily basis, but geez, if I ask you a question, just respond. I mean, don't you have to be "responsive" at work and answer your work emails?

Just say SOMETHING.

It can even be bad news. I don't care. Or, it might be half of one sentence "will get back to you."

And for those of you whose voicemail box is always full (because you are just sooo much busier than the rest of us), clear it!

I don't care.  Just respond, and quit setting me into a MIDDLE rage.

Wednesday with Weebs: Thinning those Thunder Thighs

Hi Ragers!

It's Wednesday, and that means Wednesday with Weebs here on Middle Rage.  Last week, we tackled the bra bulge but today, due to last week's requests on the site, we move to the lower body and the THIGHS.  We all know as we move toward middle age, we get a lot more jiggle here and a lot less tone there.  So today I will give you some advice on how to thin those thunder thighs.

First, MOVE. Run, bike, brisk walk -- Just get off the couch and MOVE.  Use those legs, girls!  Second, put down the carbies and cookies and eat a salad or some lowfat cottage cheese.

The exercises:

1.  Leg extensions:  Sit on the floor, back erect, legs extended in front of you.  Lift a straight leg up and then lower for 10 reps.  Keep your movements small; you only need to lift the leg two inches off the floor.  Do the same on the other leg.   Then (and this is harder), turn your hip out so the leg is turned out a bit, and lift for ten to get those inner thighs.  Do 10 on each leg.  Your legs will be burning at the end of this one!

2. The clam:   Lay on your side and support your head by resting it on your elbow.  Your knees should be bent at the side and pressed together.  Open you outer knee and the close it on your inner knee -- just like you are a clam.  Do 20 reps and repeat on the other side.  This one really hits the inner and outer thihgs.

3. Staggered Legs:  Lay on your side resting your head on a flat arm so you neck is supported on the mat. The top leg lifts up and then the bottom leg lifts up to meet it. Drop both legs to the ground and repeat with the top leg lifting up and the bottom leg meeting the top one. Do 10-20 reps on each side.  This also really works both the outer and inner thighs to get rid of those saddle bags!

Do these consistently at least three days a week and get ready for shorts (or skorts for Christine) season!

The Best Tinted Moisturizer

It's Spring, gals!  Time to ditch the heavy stuff and lighten up!  Unless you need super heavy coverage, skip the foundation and opt for tinted moisturizer.

It's lighter and smoother and provides great coverage without caking in creases and lines in your face. It is also very analogous to foundation so it should provide the coverage you need -- of course, you may need to add a proper concealer for tough spots (more on that later!)

So, we are saving you the time and research to find the best of the best.  Here are our picks:

1. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer -- We love this whole line, but it is true that year after year, she gets the prize for best tinted moisturizer.  It also has SPF protection in it.  There are several variations - Oil Free, Illuminating, etc.  Just depends on your preference.

2. NARS Tinted Moisturizer -- This is what Christine is using now. Awesome stuff. Great coverage, higher SPF than most and it lasts a long time.

The Power of Accessorizing: The Infinity Scarf

You don't always need a great outfit to look good. A pair of jeans and a colorful tee can look great if you know how to accessorize with a great pair of earrings, a purse, or a scarf.  In fact, scarfs are all the rage now.

Don't trust me. Ask the Expert. Here's a shout out to Lauren Ward, owner of my second favorite boutique, ZelioNoto in Akron, OH. She's all about the Infinity Scarf this summer.

Greetings Ragers!

Hallelujah for the infinity scarf, a trend that has taken the nation by storm (or store in my case), and doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Lets talk about "the scarf" for a minute. This is the easiest way to incorporate a trend into your wardrobe without looking overdone.  Who wants to invest on the neon rage, when this trend may only last through the month, and lets face it, it only looks appropriate on 18 year olds? It is an easy way to dabble in a current fad without going over board. And trust me, your wallet will thank you and there won't be as many blackmail photo's of you later- in that electric lime dress.

The versatility in a neutral scarf is unreal.  Our best seller is our cotton/silk blend for total breathability (bonus)! Another reason I sport a scarf almost daily is, it always has the power to clean-up my outfit and make me look a little bit more put together. So before you walk out the door today, why not add a scarf?

I am going to leave you with a cute short story about a very expensive scarf. Enjoy-http://www.huffingtonpost.com/susan-sisko-carter/why-french-women-wear-sca_b_665490.html

Wednesday with Weebs: Bust the Bra Bulge

This Wednesday starts the first of our Wednesday series with my sister, Lisa Dodd Conrow (aka "Weebs") on fitness and body issues. You can also "Ask Weebs" via our comment button any questions you have about your BODY.  (We welcome comments!)

Weebs is a Pilates and Yoga instructor and will be doing a piece each week on how to tackle challenging body parts as we age.  (Stay tuned next week for Minimizing the Muffin top!)

Ok so there are some of you out there who are in kickass shape already - this piece is not for you.  However, most of us can relate -- whether it's back fat or side boobs, we all know what the bra bulge is.

Here are Weebs' Top 3 Exercises for Busting the Bra Bulge:

1. The Old School Push Ups - I know. I know. These are back from elementary school gym class, and I HATE them.  Weebs says these are not for the chest as we think but rather the Lats.  As such, we are getting rid of the side boobs.

How to do it:

Pushups are done on your knees (for beginners) or if you are really tough, in the full plank position.  Start in with the real deal, go to your knees if you have to.
Do 10 reps
PAUSE
Do 10 more but in three steps this time:  going low, then lower, then lowest.
Your goal is to get the heart (not the nose) down to the ground.

2. Planks and Side Planks - these help tone your entire core area.  A must.

How to do it:

Get into plank position (you are on your stomach, with yourback supported by elbows, feet on the floor)
Hold 10 seconds
Pause
Hold 8 seconds
Pause
Hold 6 seconds
Pause
Hold 4 seconds
Pause  (etc. etc.)

Now move to the side, put your right forearm on the ground to support yourself and lift up your left side from the waist, legs extended out, lift up from the pelvis and the legs. Your Lats are doing all the work!

Do 10 on the right side, then...
Do 10 on the left side.

REST.

Remember, you can eat your way out of any good workout.  Do these at least 3x per week, along with a healthy diet, and you will get RESULTS!
